Depok, 29 July 2025 – The Center for Sustainability and Waste Management at Universitas Indonesia (CSWM UI), a special unit committed to advancing sustainability through applied science and responsible resource management, launched the first session of its two-part training series titled Polymer Masterclass: Processing Technologies for Sustainable Industry. This hands-on training aims to enhance the technical capabilities of polymer industry professionals in adopting sustainable material and processing practices.
Hosted on-site at Universitas Indonesia, the training welcomed over 30 participants from diverse sectors—including plastic masterbatch manufacturers, food and beverage packaging producers, and polymer-based toy companies such as Mattel Indonesia. Attendees included technical teams and production decision-makers directly involved in industrial operations.
This inaugural session focused on two core themes: strengthening the fundamental understanding of polymers in the context of sustainability and introducing material characterization techniques as a foundation for improving process quality. Two facilitators delivered four intensive modules:
- Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochamad Chalid, M.Sc.Eng., an expert in polymer science and sustainable manufacturing, and
- Dr. Adam Febriyanto, S.T., Ph.D., a specialist in advanced material characterization.
“Polymers are not merely raw materials, they represent opportunities. When we understand and harness their properties, we don’t just produce goods; we build responsible manufacturing strategies,” stated Prof. Chalid in his opening remarks.
This initiative was conducted in collaboration with DKSH Market Expansion Services Indonesia, which contributed industrial insights and instrument demonstrations. DKSH’s role helped participants understand how precision tools and high-quality instrumentation are critical in achieving process consistency and scalable sustainability in manufacturing.
One participant from Mattel Indonesia, Pandhu, reflected on the value of the session: “There are things I only truly understood after years in polymer processing, and now I see how these lessons can be directly applied to improve our actual manufacturing practices.”
In addition to technical knowledge, the training served as a networking platform that brought together professionals from across the polymer value chain. Each participant received an official certificate and access to a growing sustainability-driven industrial network.
The next installment of the Polymer Masterclass will focus on processing recycled materials, including the development of quality standards and technical parameters needed to enhance the performance of recycled inputs in industrial applications. This series reflects CSWM UI’s continued commitment to bridging academic expertise and industry transformation toward measurable sustainability.
