On September 24, 2024, the Center for Sustainable Waste Management (CSWM) at the University of Indonesia (UI) collaborated with Plastics and Rubber Indonesia 2024 (mention if it’s an event or organization) to host a webinar on “Dissemination of the Ad Hoc Intersessional Open-Ended Expert Groups and Local Regulation of Chemical Safety on Plastic Products.
The session featured insights from Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochamad Chalid, S.Si. M.Sc.Eng., a delegate from Indonesia, who shared key topics concerning the criteria and non-criteria for identifying plastic pollutants. He also discussed chemicals of concern that may be regulated by the International Legally Binding Instrument (ILBI) to address plastic pollution, as outlined by the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee established by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
The webinar also covered local regulations regarding chemical safety in food packaging, presented by Dra. Deksa Presiana, Apt., M.Kes., from the Food Standardization Agency (BPOM). Dr. Presiana discussed existing regulations for chemicals present in food packaging that come into direct contact with skin. The session concluded by highlighting how industry stakeholders can prepare for these regulatory changes and capitalize on opportunities arising from the shift towards more sustainable practices.
“Plastic pollution is a significant issue, and we all need to take action, from upstream producers to consumers,” Prof. Chalid stated in his closing remarks. “With collective effort, we can find solutions to address this existing problem.”
