Depok, Indonesia – May 20, 2025 – Universitas Indonesia, through the Center for Sustainability and Waste Management (CSWM UI), officially launched a Campus Waste Management Initiatives program called RAISE: Responsible Eco-Action by UI Youth for Sustainable Environment. This series of RAISE programs was opened by Sustainable Youth UInitiative, a cross-faculty youth movement to accelerate the improvement of waste management systems on campus. Taking place at Ruang Apung UI, the event catalyzed collective action, calling upon student leaders to convert concern into commitment.
The conference was opened by Prof. Dr. Ir. Mohammad Chalid, S.Si. M.Sc.Eng., Principal of CSWM UI, who laid the foundation for the movement by introducing CSWM’s Waste Management Campus Framework, structured around four pillars: Habit transformation, Facility enhancement, Data traceability, and Edutourism. In his keynote, he expressed the urgency of integrating sustainability into youth leadership, stating, “This movement is not just about changing how we manage waste, it’s about raising a generation that understands how to lead through sustainability.”

Continuing the session, Dr. Mila Tejamaya, S.Si., MOHS. Ph.D., Director of Campus Welfare, underscored the importance of cultivating sustainable behavior across all segments of the university community. Drawing from data and recent policy developments, she highlighted UI’s multi-layered waste management strategy, including organic waste composting, hazardous waste supervision, and digital monitoring. Dr. Mila emphasized that student involvement is vital, stating that increasing awareness and active participation can accelerate the shift toward sustainable waste systems.
Also present at the event was Dr. Ajib Setyo Arifin, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., Director of the Directorate of Operational and Facility Maintenance (DOPF), whose attendance underscored the university’s institutional support for student-led sustainability initiatives. The corporate sector was represented by Coca-Cola Europacific Partners (CCEP) Indonesia, which reaffirmed its dedication to a circular economy through partnerships with academic institutions like UI. Their participation highlighted the power of multi-stakeholder collaboration in turning sustainability plans into real impact.
A defining moment of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the Student Executive Bodies (BEM) from all faculties and the Vocational Program. The MoU solidifies a shared commitment to develop a comprehensive and sustainable waste management system, promote responsible waste behavior, and advocate for effective infrastructure utilization across the university. With this event, CSWM UI sets the groundwork for a university-wide transformation. The Sustainable Youth UInitiative is not a one-off campaign, but a long-term movement, built from the ground up by students, backed by policy, and supported by industry, toward a campus that doesn’t just teach sustainability, but lives it.
