Jakarta, 22 August 2024 – In an ongoing effort to combat plastic pollution and advance sustainable practices within the industry, key stakeholders from various ministries, academic institutions, and industry associations gathered today for a focused group discussion (FGD) in preparation for the upcoming INC-5 negotiations. This event, organized by the Ministry of Industry, aims to strengthen Indonesia’s position in international discussions on plastic pollution reduction and explore regulatory frameworks that support the development of the petrochemical and bioplastic industries.
CSWM UI participated in the Focus Group Discussion as part of the academia to the development of ILBI draft in context with Indonesia’s industrial landscape and regulation in implementation in Indonesia through the Ministry of Industry. This FGD serves as a preparatory platform for Indonesia’s delegation to the INC-5, where global leaders will negotiate binding agreements to curb plastic pollution. The outcomes of this discussion will significantly shape Indonesia’s contributions to these international negotiations, ensuring that the country’s interests are well-represented while advancing global environmental sustainability.
The FGD covered a series of critical topics, including:
- Review of the Draft ILBI (International Legally Binding Instrument) and Indonesia’s Progress on INC-5 – A detailed analysis presented by the Director of Economic and Environmental Development from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- Indonesia’s Preparations for INC-5 – Insights into the country’s strategies for upcoming negotiations, discussed by the Director of Waste Reduction from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
- Policy Support for the Development of the Petrochemical and Bioplastic Industries – Explored by the Assistant Deputy for Industrial Development from the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.
“Indonesia is at a pivotal moment in its fight against plastic pollution. The integration of stricter regulations within the industry is not just a necessity but a responsibility we owe to future generations. By fostering innovation we can lead the progression to a more sustainable industrial practices,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochamad Chalid, Principal of CSWM UI and one of the delegates from the Ministry of Industry that will represent Indonesia in the Ad-Hoc Intersessional Forum of the INC this August.
