Our journey in sustainability and waste management began when we started our research on utilizing biomass waste, such as oil palm empty fruit bunch, for manufacturing green polymer. The goal was to find a sustainable solution to waste management and reduce the dependence on non-renewable resources. Our approach to finding solutions for waste management was confined to the technological aspect only, while in reality tackling the waste management issue must be from a multidiscipline perspective to develop sustainable solutions.
Universitas Indonesia has been committed to increasing its contribution toward implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly environmental issues. In line with this commitment, Universitas Indonesia established our Center for Sustainability and Waste Management Universitas Indonesia (CSWM-UI) in 2022.

The center aims to become a leading institution in promoting sustainable development by addressing waste management issues through research and community engagement. CSWM-UI’s mission is to bridge the gap between academia, industry, and the community, find solutions to environmental problems, promote sustainable practices, and contribute to creating a sustainable future.
CSWM-UI comprises an expert board from multidisciplinary fields, such as material and environmental engineering, social sciences, and business. This diverse team enables us to approach waste management issues from various perspectives. With its focus on research and community engagement, CSWM-UI is well-positioned to provide comprehensive solutions to waste management problems and contribute to the global effort towards a sustainable future.
