CSWM UI Form an Agreement with Ministry of Trade to Strengthen K3L Compliance and Consumer Safety

Press Release
Signing of the agreement by Mr. Matheus Hendro Purnomo and Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochamad Chalid

Jakarta, 31 July 2024 – A formal agreement was signed on 31 July 2024 at the Directorate of Standardization and Quality Control, Ministry of Trade to officially commence a collaboration between Center for Sustainability and Waste Management UI (CSWM UI) and Indonesia’s Ministry of Trade. This agreement was signed by Prof. Dr. Ir. Mochamad Chalid, S.Si, M.Sc.Eng as the principal of CSWM UI, and Matheus Hendro Purnomo as the director of standardization and quality assurance, Ministry of Trade.

This collaboration was proposed as a response to Indonesia’s recent implementation of the mandatory K3L (Safety, Health, and Environmental Protection) registration for specific products, which marks a significant step towards safeguarding consumer welfare, especially in protecting consumers from hazardous substances by requiring registration for products lacking SNI standards.

“An intriguing question arises: could the K3L registration process hinder innovation? While consumer safety is a priority, it’s essential to avoid creating an environment that discourages the development of new and potentially beneficial products,” said Prof. Mochamad Chalid as the principal of CSWM UI.

Led by Adream Bais Junior, a project leader from CSWM UI, this collaboration aims to streamline the K3L registration process, with a particular focus on products containing chemical substances. The project will address the identification of hazardous effects and their potential migration to consumers. By conducting comprehensive risk assessments, identifying crucial quality parameters, and establishing rigorous safety standards, CSWM UI will contribute to refining regulations in accordance with Undang-Undang Nomor 7 Tahun 2014 which mainly cover consumer protection.

“We hope this collaboration will amplify and help ensure the regulation as a credible source for information circulation among the people and establish it as a standardized consumer protection in Indonesia,” said Matheus Hendro Purnomo, Director of Standardization and Quality Assurance from the Ministry of Trade.
